Felder Felder / Fashion Buisness Club

Apologies for the sad picture quality, not my fault entirely (I'm not blaming the equipment..but actually I am, C501 not the best in poor lighting and the shutter speed is too slow.. i think!) We're at the most recent Fashion Business Club networker at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) in Pall Mall, London to hear identical twins Danny & Annette Felder of design label Felder Felder.  Ladies with an attitude mashing music and fashion. In person they're statuesque.. easily 6 foot in heels, on point and together, its hard to imagine them out on the razz for days at a time but they told thats what they do, work hard and party harder!
video

They shared much in the way of candid insider insight.. from their days learning the trade at Central Saint Martins to interning with Stephen Jones to their 'double trouble' twin dressing days in a tiny German village, to the music and images that inspire their collections. Their studio's seen it all, dancing to Grace Jones, Hendrix, The Doors catfighting and then of course making up, sometimes they're their own house models! and they never compromise on the design, if both arent loving then its out. They're just able to tell us about a uniform project with Nobu Berkely Street and offer these words of wisdom to start ups.. "you cant dont listen to too many people, just those that were there in the begining"

Collectable Trash

Inspired by pedal powered push bike a team of international designers are exhibiting works at Mewecycled. The collective includes some clever re-use's of materials and creative recycling which includes amongst others a strong UK contingency. Including Ting recycling seat belts into bags, Nick Rawcliffe ex skateboard deck chairs and clothing curiosities fashioned from ex-office furniture designed by Ryan Frank. In their own words "there is no recycling without cycling and no cycling without recycling". Aiming high the exhibition hopes to inspire a global movement that reduces landfills while at the same time breathing new life into waste. Furniture, lighting, clothing, bags and objects.. As the old saying go's one mans trash is another mans treasure. Browse the collection at Mewecyle shop in shop

Mewecycled runs fron 2nd - 20th June '09 Colette 213 Rue Saint-Honore 75001 Paris

Mai Ikuzawa.. boom chica 'Bow Wow'

Boom chica "Bow Wow".. was a bit easy but its always nice to do a post about cool ladies! ..the other phrase that came to mind was womenomicer. Mai Ikuzawa is University of the Arts Alumni ex CSM and Founder and Top Dog at Bow Wow International and by the way Mai is a girl (hold that thought till the end of the post!)

Bow Wow International is pretty hot, not surprisingly they win awards for their work! Loving Mai's approach to design and branding, check out the website its a sick & slick portfolio of work. So be on the look out for her latest project a collaboration with Colette, the MeWecycle exhibition which features ‘werecycled’ vintage and modern bicycle parts the exhibition runs from june 2nd- june 20th. Mai's juggling a few other high profile projects including the re-branding of British film company 'Working Title' (Billy Elliot The Musical & the Nanny McPhee .. the sequel) that ties in their 100th title celebrations, a brand make over of the Gallery Fumi

And this is the very cool bit of news.. guys and girls (if your into fast cars), Mai was raised in the world of international motor racing so as well as being a gorgeous, s'uber international design consultant, she is now the official ambassador and proud owner of the exclusive Motor Trend Car of Year 2009 Nissan GT-R  (that's her ride rolling down the ramp in the picture above!) she's the first U.K based woman to get her very own multi performance super car which arrived in the country earlier this week..! you know she deserves a 'whoop whoop' right!

Peaches Wound issue VII

Images from the latest issue of Wound Magazine issue 7. The crazy image of Peaches coming out of the background is the cover and the image of Peaches eating a peach with the claw talons is inside.. and below is a little behind the scenes of the shoot, courtesy of Nora Nona..
"It’s 3.00pm when I walk into Victor de Mello’sstudio loft just off Kingsland Road Dalston. I’ve been booked to do makeup for the singer Peaches for the cover of Wound, the theme being 'beige on beige'.
Charles is styling the shoot and introduces me to the vibrant artist who turns out to be a petite woman who is very down to earth, and puts one at ease straight away. She stands to greet me with a big smile and I see the front of her hair has been bleached blonde for our shoot, sides of her hair shaven, giving you a real punk flavour.
Are you ready to start with your make-up?” I ask her politely, trying to sound calm (we have only two hours to do hair, make-up, dress and shoot her) she has a gig at 6.00pm. With no time to lose, Kavita, the nail wizard has already prepared and gets stuck in straight away.
Hairdresser Sam is cool to work at the same time as me, so there’s Peaches with someone working on her newly beached hair, myself working on her face and Kavita on nails. While this is all going on we’re also being filmed and asked questions about what’s been going on in her life, and what we’re doing as we’re working.
I start by preparing her skin with Giorgio Armani’s Crema Nera; made from volcanic obsidian it’s very mineral rich and her skin just drinks it up. “Sorry my skin is so dehydrated” she says apologetically. “Don’t you worry sweetheart” I reassure her “it’s pure magic I have in this here pot!” We laugh together. “I need it, I’ve been travelling and working a lot recently!” Crema Nera creates the perfect canvas to work on the i use Christian Dior’s new Diorskin Nude foundation. I’m a makeup artist who always airbrushes to create a flawless finish and when I start to do so Peaches says “oh I love those machines! I would love to get one to take on tour, ‘cos they’re so quick.” The excitement in the air builds as it’s now show-time as she jumps in front of the camera to work her magic. Before we knew it, that whirlwind of fussy creativity was over…BUT WHAT A MOMENT!"

Living My Life Like It’s Golden….

Sometimes life really does seem to spin madly out of control and being the control freak that I am  ( think Monica from Friends) , I don’t always react in a cool , calm and collected manner.  For the past few weeks I have been simultaneously dealing with laptop bugs, tummy bugs and strange bugs in my flat. Well these things do tend to happen in threes don’t they ?  It’s been truly frustrating as I have been receiving some amazing products that I have been chomping at the bait to share with you all.
I could waffle on about the dramas of the last few weeks but I won’t ! Everything has simmered back down (health back on track , using friends laptop , have learnt to BACK UP and the creepy crawlies are all gone) .

Now on to the good stuff.. In the world of beauty, hype about new products can really be just that …HYPE. Then there are times when the most sumptuous and innovative products are seemingly hidden under the desks of Beauty Editors, only to see the light of day when the constant hounding of the products PR reps forces the editor to share the joy of their new discovery. Belmacz Beauty is for me a victim of its own loveliness. Created by Jewellery designer Julia Muggenberg, the range effortlessly fuses make-up and adornment. Think lush golden eye shadows enriched with 24-carat gold leaf, shimmering dust made from finely crushed real pearls ,pots of vividly coloured shiny lip glosses begging for fingers to be dipped into their pools of gold leafed enhanced luminosity and you'll be on the right track.

I was granted the perfect opportunity to try out the range on a recent date (yes, I actually had a date!) with a very lovely young man. I wanted to create a golden glow and I  needed my skin to look like I had just returned from a weeks worth of sunning it up in Martinique.

For this look I applied just one layer of Blitz eye shadow and slicked Halo ( the rose flavoured lip balm /eye brow fixer) just under my brow line and on the apples of my cheeks.  I then let loose with Pearl ( the shimmering dust ) all over my face and on my shoulders.  To give my overall look a little punch I used Revlon Red on my lips but then applied two dabs of Glow lip gloss in the centres of both my upper and lower lips to pull the whole 'Island glow' look together.
I am by no means a professional make up artist and I generally use my fingers instead of brushes. The Belmacz products really indulged my inner finger painting self , it was like dipping my fingers into melted jewels. My favourite products in the range are definitely Blitz ( subtle bling for the eyes) and Glow ( sweet smelling- 24 -carat gold leafed - long wearing lip gloss!).
Kudos to Madame Muggenberg for creating a range of make up that is unabashedly indulgent and unapologetically feminine. I adore the products. It's as simple as that.

Penny Martin Nominated Fashion Communicator 2009

Nominations and special honors for the fourth annual Scottish Fashion Awards in association with Vogue.com have been announced this week. Amongst them one of my personal favourites at LCF Professor Penny Martin (ROOTSTEIN HOPKINS CHAIR OF FASHION IMAGERY)A few months back I was invited to sit in on a Contemporary Curating Professional Practice class Prof Penny Martin was the guest speaker. She gave us an amazing talk about her work at SHOWstudio and set the group the task of re-imagining an article already printed in a magazine and refashion it for the Internet. I'm not a Curator, so I think I pretty much flopped on that one but it did inspire me to have another go at working out an idea of my dissertation. I've borrowed this line from Jo Craven at FT.com its a short & sweet summary of 18K word dissertaion topic..  what with the growing trend in 'fashion film' "do we need the catwalk when we've got pixels?"

I have to be honest and admit I've only recently been introduced to Prof Martins work but I have been keeping on eye on Scotland and fell in lust with Bebaroque tights and Keira Thorley bows. Now that I see Prof Martins nomination amongst the diverse group of rising stars and fashion industry leaders as Fashion Communicator of 2009  I'm glad I took the opportunity to get involved in thinking outside the marketing box. Winners will be announced at the glittering awards ceremony and Gala VIP event on Sunday 21st June at Stirling Castle, Scotland.

Am I Beautiful ?

My experience from being a contestant on the first series of 'Colleens Real Women' ( yes, I was) is that although the industry is keen to appear that they are ready for us ( Real Women) , the reality is that it will take years, possibly decades before significant change is made in the representation of beauty that is truly diverse, beauty that embraces curves as well as slim line hips. Beauty that loves noses, lips ,eyes and bums of every shape and size. Yes we've come a long way but we still have miles to go . Do me a favour , today stand in front of a mirror ( naked!)  take a long hard look at yourself and say 'I am GORGEOUS' ... because you are.

Be sure to follow this link to read a thought provoking article by Rachel Shields on the fashion worlds present flirtation with the use of 'Real Women' in advertising campaigns and on the covers of glossies. Have the fash pack finally embraced beauty in all its magnificently diverse forms or is this just another 'trend' that will soon be cast aside quicker than we can say 'harem trousers'

Lost Dreams and High Hopes..

Lost Dreams & High Hopes from twenty%extra on Vimeo.

This is a shameless plug for the lovely and extremely talented  creative duo... twenty%extra !!.. A quirky name for a quirky agency, twenty%extra is the unusual mix of creative agency and social enterprise. Partners Ansel Neckles and Stephanie McLaren both wanted to use their creative skills in advertising and the creative industries to start a new business. Not content with just helping big brands to get bigger, as they did in their past, they also wanted to have a positive social impact.

This realisation was the birthplace of twenty%extra – a creative agency that also invests in community values, utilising creative practises to engage and educate young people and communities while providing workshops to placements and long-term employment.

But it doesn’t stop there. twenty%extra believe that in order to change something you need to do something. And with their daily mantra of “Effective communication leads to effective change”, twenty%extra set about creating Campaigns For Change, the agencies ambitious aim of using advertising strategies as a catalyst to create a social impact.

Working to their own briefs, twenty%extra invest time and profits to produce campaigns based on current social issues. Applying conventional advertising techniques as well as grass roots experiential activities.

In essence twenty%extra is about one thing – a conversation. The belief being, a good one happens when you take the time to listen to the other party before you do any talking. To know your audience is to have something to say to your audience, not to mention the places you need to say it.

There’s a lot that needs to be said, and even more that needs to be done, which is perhaps why when asked how they’d like to be remembered, Ansel and Steph replied “as younger Tony Benns, with less grey hair and whiter trainers.” LOL! .. curious? then get in touch

Oh Mikey.. My Ears

It was my birthday yesterday, bar the 3 seminar / classes I had time tabled and ideas of a spa pamper day that I cancelled because of said classes, I hadn't planned much. So when I got organised and made it to 'My Mickey Ears' launch at START women's boutique in Rivington Street i had lovely surprise. Big thanks to Raoul for inviting me along it made my birthday! I laughed, ate some ridiculously naughty treats strawberry's dipped in white chocolate, mini cupcakes, mini Mickey Laduree Macaroons. If you've ever been to START you know its a boutique with copious amounts of eye candy to tempt the monies out of your purse and despite a load of happy mickey mouse ear wearing smiley folk carrying food and liqui,d Brix the brave still had clothes on rails and jewels in cabinets!

Brix Smith-Start START Boutique slash Designer rival on Goks Fashion Fix

The whole evening scored a high 10, the perfect execution of make 'em feel good, get them smiling, keep it light with the obvious serious undertones of raising money for Great Ormonds Street Childrens Hospital. The celebrity customised Mickey Ears Exhibition is on view at START until 27th May before being auctioned off on Buy Once Give Twice bidding closes at 8pm on 5th June. We had alot of fun, fun is infectious, its silly wearing Mickey ears, but nearly everyone had a pair on. Mickey the helium balloons, glitter glue, feathers and sticky on crystals made you feel like a kid. And there's more watch the video.. the single ladees dancing to Beyonce Single Ladies  (whoop whoop!) ..

My 'My Mickey Ears' creation.. the 'Mickeys Girl' ears..

START boutique basement was converted into Mickeys craft creations corner.. I made the Mickey girl ear.. walked up the stairs out the door, took 5 paces to left and lost them! On the way over to Sam's boutique we played spot the mickey balloon along Shoreditch High Street, the smiles lasted all the way to West London.. trying to control two metallic filled balloons tied to your wrist on the tube is definitely a conversation starter.
