The Weird and Wonderful World of Alexander Hoda

This week is the opening of Alexander Hodas latest exhibition New Sculpture at The Arts Gallery Davies Street W1. I had the opportunity to get a sneak preview before the private view, and by that I mean I literally snuck at 4pm just after access to the gallery had been closed off in preparation for the evenings formalities. This is Hodas first exhibition since he graduated from the Royal Academy in June this year and isnt one for squeamers.
I spotted many an observer sufficiently moved (you know what us students can be like), stopping to really study the pieces which have been given interesting names like Googglebox, Jawbreaker and Munchbunch. I even overheard an interesting debate about what kind of activities the curious pieces were engaged in ! Distorted, disfigured, outlandish sculptures reminiscent of a sci-fi Alien is an accurate descriptor for the darker grime pieces but they range from almost cute matt cerulean blue, white and salmony pink to murky, mucky melting organic textile like creations. Hoda works in latex, rubber and as far as I smelt high gloss lacquer, up close the effect is beautiful sculptures that are almost decorative, like huge pendant amulets. A reading the artist might not have intended, he describes his work as grotesque, confrontational and extreme. I'm quite taken by the weird and wonderful world of Alexander Hoda. Its free entry to the Arts Gallery so if your in the area shopping over Christmas and New Year it worth a view/
